Lancia Ypsilon now available for purchase

Lancia Ypsilon now available for purchase

Italy's beloved Lancia Ypsilon is back and looking better than ever. And it's now available for purchase in both its all-electric and a mild-hybrid (MHEV) versions.

The initial batch is the Lancia Ypsilon Edizione Limitata Cassina is a collaboration between Lancia and Cassina, an Italian furniture design brand.

The all-electric Lancia Ypsilon boasts a range of up to 403 km (WLTP combined cycle) and a fast-charging capability that allows you to add 100 km of range in 10 minutes of charging. The MSRP of this early batch starts at €39,999, which is rather ambitious on Lancia's part.

The Ypsilon's mild-hybrid (MHEV) features a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder 100-horsepower hybrid engine paired with a 6-speed e-DCT automatic transmission. And it beats the EV version in the probably most important duel - it starts at a far more palatable €28,000.

Lancia claims the Ypsilon is the only car in its segment to offer Level 2 Autonomous Driving as standard.

The Ypsilon availability opens the new chapter for Lancia, an era defined by bold electrification and an innovative vision for a sustainable future. With the kind of price it commands though we'd really be surprised if there was a rush to the showrooms.

These Are The Lancia Classics That Will Inspire The Upcoming Ypsilon, Aurelia, And Delta

These Are The Lancia Classics That Will Inspire The Upcoming Ypsilon, Aurelia, And Delta

As we approach the Lancia Design Day that is scheduled for November 28, the Italian carmaker has revealed which classic and iconic models will serve as an inspiration for the upcoming Ypsilon, Aurelia, and Delta.

Lancia designers chose several models from the automaker’s illustrious past including the Aurelia, Flaminia, Fulvia, Beta HPE, Gamma, Delta, Stratos, and 037. We don’t blame them as it is really hard to choose among so many gorgeous vehicles. Their goal is for their designs to communicate “eclecticism, elegance, and grit”.

All three of the new electrified models will feature distinct Lancia design features described as “the calice, the sinuous lines, and the geometric-primitive forms”. Those terms probably don’t ring any bells to people outside design studios, so the company broke it down. More specifically, the “calice” is inspired by the front end of the Aurelia and Delta, the “sinuous lines” are fittingly depicted on the profile of the Aurelia B20, while the “geometric forms” are best interpreted by the 037, Delta, and Stratos racecars.

We already know that the Ypsilon supermini will arrive first in 2024, followed by the Aurelia crossover flagship in 2026, and the reborn Delta hatchback in 2028. Talking specifically about the Delta, Luca Napolitano, Lancia CEO, said it will boast geometric lines, describing it as “sculpted and muscular”.

Lancia also highlighted the “Venetian blinds-inspired structure” of the 1975 Beta HPE, as well as the “traveling living room” character of the 1976 Gamma Coupe, features that will also find their way into the new models, possibly inside the premium cabins. The automaker has already confirmed the extensive use of recycled materials, the “SALA” (Sound Air Light Augmented) virtual interface , and an ambiance inspired by Italian furniture.

It hasn’t been specified if the Lancia Design Day will be accompanied by new concepts, sketches, or renderings. However, we expect to learn more about its “Renaissance” and get more hints about future production models in this special event.

Lancia’s Upcoming Ypsilon, Aurelia, And Delta EVs To Feature Illuminated Grilles, Retro-Inspired Interiors

Stellantis investing in a ten-year plan to bring Lancia back to export markets, following years of neglect within the FCA Group. In the wake of its new era, Lancia confirmed it will launch three new models before going EV-only by 2028 while announcing some interesting design features set to debut in the future range.

Luca Napolitano, Lancia CEO, said: “The future of Lancia is already planresent and by the end of 2022 we will have a first taste of the new course that will lead us to become a credible brand in the premium market, in the name of innovative, clean and safe mobility”.

Luca Napolitano, Lancia CEO, said: “The future of Lancia is already present and by the end of 2022 we will have a first taste of the new course that will lead us to become a credible brand in the premium market, in the name of innovative, clean and safe mobility”.

Three New Models – Ypsilon, Aurelia, and Delta

Starting with the debuts, a new Lancia will be arriving every two years, with the resulting three-model range covering 50 percent of the market according to the automaker. The all-new fourth-generation Ypsilon will arrive in 2024, available in hybrid and EV variants. It will replace the current Ypsilon which despite being on sale with minimum changes since 2011 remains a best-seller in Italy.

Lancia’s first crossover will follow in 2026, reviving at the same time the historic Aurelia nameplate, which was used between 1950 and 1958 for a series of sedan, coupe, spider, and convertible models. Finally, the much anticipated reborn Lancia Delta compact hatchback will arrive in 2028. Both the Aurelia and the Delta will be exclusively offered in EV form, most likely based on Stellantis underpinnings. By 2028 Lancia confirmed it will be an EV-only brand, which means that the hybrid Ypsilon will be discontinued after four years in the market.

While we already had a good idea of the upcoming launches, Lancia’s latest press release includes the first info on design. The new models will be taking inspiration from the rich heritage of Lancia, reinterpreting iconic elements “in a modern and contemporary way”.

Illuminated Grilles And Retro-Inspired Interiors With Recycled Materials

The first hint is about the chalice-shaped grille which will be revisited thanks to “innovative lighting elements”. The illuminated grille trend is not something new, since BMW, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, and Skoda are already offering it as an option for certain models. We also guess that the new Lancia grille will be covered since the new models will be mostly EVs.

Responsible for the design of all three Lancia models will be Jean-Pierre Ploué, who was recently appointed director of Lancia Design in Torino Centro Stile.

Inside the cabin, Lancia will make use of the highest percentage of recycled materials in the Stellantis group. At the same time, the fact that Lancia is benchmarking Mercedes-Benz means we could see a great improvement in quality, fit and finish. The interior ambiance will be inspired by iconic models of the past and furniture from great Italian designers.

Lancia will also introduce the “SALA” virtual interface (Sound Air Light Augmented). Through this, the driver will control the sound of the audio system, the air conditioning, and the ambient lighting. A similar atmosphere will be replicated inside the new Lancia dealerships.

The company wants to create 100 new dealers in 60 major European cities with half of its sales taking place online. While the initial expansion plan is exclusive to Europe, if things go well in the future, Lancia will consider selling cars to right-hand-drive markets. In the second quarter of 2022, Lancia will announce its organizational structure in foreign countries.

2028 Lancia Delta: Here’s What We Know And Hope For The Premium Italian Hatchback’s Revival

These illustrations were made by Jean Francois Hubert/SB-Medien for CarScoops. They are speculative drawings that are not related to or endorsed by Lancia.

Lancia is one of Stellantis’ three premium brands, together with Alfa Romeo and DS Automobiles. According to the latest reports concerning its future strategy, we are expecting at least three new model launches from the Italian brand between 2024 and 2027. It is possible that these plans will include the revival of the Delta nameplate in the form of a fully electric premium compact hatchback.

A Short History Lesson For The Delta

Lancia produced three generations of Delta before eventually dropping the model from its range without a successor. The first generation was launched in 1979 designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and stayed in production with numerous updates until 1994.

Between 1987 and 1992, Delta-based Group A race cars won six consecutive WRC constructors’ titles for Lancia, making it one of the most successful nameplates in rallying. Late in the Delta’s lifespan, the HF Integrale performance variants set a benchmark for modern hot hatches, eventually becoming sought-after classics.

The second generation designed by IDEA was based on Fiat Tipo’s platform and enjoyed a considerably shorter lifespan between 1993-1999. After a long hiatus, Lancia unveiled the third generation in 2008, sharing its underpinnings with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and the Fiat Bravo. The model stayed in production until 2014 having eliminated any possible connection with its glorious racing heritage in favor of comfort and premium style.

Lancia Heading Towards Electrification

Lancia’s big return to the automotive landscape is expected to start with the long-awaited new-generation Ypsilon in 2024. The popular supermini will be followed by a fully electric crossover in 2026, and possibly by an electric compact hatchback in 2027.

Read Also: Lancia Reportedly Working On Three New Models, Including SUV

The latter shouldn’t be taken for granted though, as Lancia officials have yet to decide on whether a hatchback bodystyle would make sense. Before kicking off Delta’s development program, they need to ensure there will be enough demand while weighing their options on shared platforms and components.

Why Does It Take Them So Long?

One would expect the new Delta to appear as a sister model to the fresh Peugeot 308, Opel Astra, and DS 4 siblings that are based on the EMP2 platform. However, it seems that Lancia is not ready (or willing) to launch its premium hatchback yet.

If it gets green-lit, the fourth-generation Delta could be based on the STLA Medium architecture, announced as part of Stellantis’ $35 billion electrification plan. According to the official presentation, the C- and D-Segment vehicles based on the STLA Medium will have up to 700 km (410 miles) of range. Depending on the powertrain they could be FWD, RWD, and AWD, with power outputs ranging from 168-241 hp (125-180 kW / 170-245 PS).

Retro-inspired Looks Would Be More Than Welcome

Since June 2021, French design veteran Jean-Pierre Ploué became Lancia’s new design director supervising the young talent at Lancia Design in Torino Centro Stile. While it is too early to have an idea of the direction he is going to take on the design language of future models, it is possible that he will turn to the company’s illustrious past.

The latest speculative rendering for the electric Lancia Delta depicts a modern and minimalist two-box design. While not as extreme as this independently designed homage to the S4 Stradale, the alternative design proposal is heavily inspired by the Giugiaro-designed first-generation Delta. Styling cues like the outer shape of the headlights integrated with the grille, the lower bumper intake, the boxy fender flairs, and the angular C-pillar are clear nods to the original.

While nothing is official yet, Lancia fans are craving for a new Delta – especially if it came together with an HF Integrale performance variant. This sounds highly unlikely, but we shouldn’t lose hope. Given that the company’s 115th birthday celebration is scheduled for November 27, 2021, we could be hearing some news about Lancia’s future strategy then.

Stellantis Announces They Will Be Forming Their Own Design Studio

Stellantis has announced the formation of the new Stellantis Design Studio, a creative agency that will provide design services for companies dealing with everything from transportation, to industrial, to manufacturing, and more.

The new studio looks to build on the current Peugeot Design Lab’s nine years of experience and over 120 collaborations, as well as expand its expertise to the rest of Stellantis’ brands, such as Maserati, Jeep, DS Automobiles, and Lancia. It will be led by Klaus Busse and Arnault Gournac, both of whom have already had experience serving significant roles within the company.

Klaus Busse currently oversees Maserati and Jeep Europe, and as of now, he will also be taking on the role of Head of Design at the new Stellantis Design Studio. His job will also entail leading the Studio’s expansion out to its respective brands. Regarding the founding of the Studio and his new position, he said: “The success story and expertise of Peugeot Design Lab is unrivaled. The extension of this know-how to all of our brands opens up incomparable perspectives.”

Arnault Gournac is the director of both the Peugeot Design Lab as well as Cycles Peugeot, and, along with Busse, has helped lead the new Design Studio in its global expansion. “Looking back on our brand portfolio, Stellantis designers have created some of the most exciting and visually appealing vehicles in automotive history,” said Gournac. “We plan to take that creative energy and offer our key competencies to our global external partners to help them take their brand and design projects to the next level. We will work to expand our reach by fostering new partnerships with global clients from all horizons.”

The Peugeot Design Lab will still operate alongside the Stellantis Design Studio, with a key role being to address Peugeot’s projects undertaken beyond the automotive sector. As time goes on, Stellantis Design Studio plans to progressively incorporate this knowledge and apply it to the rest of its brands.

Lancia Reportedly Working On Three New Models, Including SUV

Lancia currently has a one-model range that is exclusively available in Italy. However, this is going to change soon as Stellantis has big plans for the historic brand.

Automotive News reports that Lancia will unveil a trio of brand new models between 2024 and 2027: a city car, a compact crossover, and a compact hatchback. Stellantis Global Chief Design Officer Jean-Pierre Ploué will be responsible for the design, after pledging to create a fresh identity for Lancia inspired by its illustrious 115-year history.

The current generation Lancia Ypsilon might be performing well in terms of sales in its home market with more than 3 million units sold in 35 years, but the aging platform won’t hold for much longer. The Fiat 500-based model premiered more than 10 years ago at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Since then it has received a series of special editions and updates, including a facelift in 2015, the addition of a mild-hybrid version in 2020, and another discreet facelift in 2021.

According to the latest report, Lancia has already started the development of an all-new city car to replace the Ypsilon with a scheduled reveal in mid-2024. It will be based on a new version of the CMP / eCMP platform currently underpinning the likes of the Peugeot 208 and 2008, Opel Corsa and Mokka, and DS3 Crossback. This means it will be Lancia’s first fully electric model but it will also be available with a petrol engine as an alternative.

Lancia’s second new model will follow in the first quarter of 2026 in the form of a fully electric compact crossover. This one will be based on the STLA Medium platform that will also underpin several future models from the Stellantis brand portfolio. Four of those medium-sized cars will be produced at the Melfi plant in Italy, according to the workers’ unions.

Last but not least, there is another project on the horizon although this one hasn’t been green-lit yet. Rumor has it will be a compact hatchback that could potentially revive the Delta name. If Lancia ensures there will be enough demand for this segment in the future, the hatchback will be unveiled towards the end of 2027.

While nothing is official yet, we would love to see new models proudly wearing the Lancia badge and really hope that those long-term plans materialize. As a reminder, the last time FCA Group tried to revive Lancia was with rebadged Chrysler models for the European market – something that didn’t end up well.

Stellantis has declined to comment on the report but we wouldn’t be surprised if a future strategic plan is announced sometime in the next months. A few days ago, Lancia started publishing episodes of the docufilm “Elegance on the move” exploring the brand’s history. The official 115th birthday celebration is scheduled for the 27th of November 2021.

Either way, Stellantis CEO, Carlos Tavares, has secured 10 years’ worth of investments for Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and DS Automobiles. During that period, the three premium brands of the group need to define their vision, build a roadmap, share development costs, and prove they can be viable in the long term.

Lancia revival gets underway with new design boss

If ever there was such a thing as a zombie automotive brand, Lancia would most certainly fit the bill. The storied Italian carmaker has been living in a perpetual comatose state, its range of models whittled down to just one ten-year-old car, the Ypsilon.

A revival has long been rumoured and owner Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) even merged Lancia’s products with Chrysler’s in an attempt to boost sales, with little success. But the creation of the new Stellantis group seems to have finally lit a fire under the movement, as the building blocks are slowly falling into place.

The latest news is that Lancia will get a new design boss in Jean-Pierre Ploué, Stellantis’ chief design officer. The Frenchman will lead a “lean and focused team” of young designers from the group’s design studio in Turin. “Lancia’s renaissance is a truly exciting challenge,” he said. “Lancia is an iconic brand which will be restored to its central historical position in Europe, leveraging on its huge potential.”

Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano added, “I want to welcome Jean-Pierre Ploué. I am very honoured we can leverage on such a diverse team of professionals to work together for the success of Lancia.”

This follows the announcement of a new management team in March, with former Alfa Romeo product planning boss Paolo Loiotile in charge of products, former Fiat/Abarth sales head Yann Chabert in charge of marketing and communications, former Lamborghini woman Erica Valeria Ferraioli in charge of pricing and Fiat Panda launch architect Roberta Zerbi in charge of both Lancia and Alfa Romeo in Europe.

It’s been previously reported that Lancia will be working with Stellantis’ other premium brands, Alfa Romeo and DS, to strengthen the group’s presence in the sector. The carmakers will be collaborating on new platforms, powertrains and features to differentiate themselves from their mainstream relatives.

To reinforce its renewed focus on styling, Lancia will release the first part of its “Elegance in Motion Since 1906” docufilm on Thursday, which will feature Napolitano talking about the company’s design heritage.

Stellantis Gives Lancia A New Lease Of Life, Appoints New Design Director

Lancia is currently only a shadow of its former self, but Stellantis claims to have plans for its future, appointing French designer Jean-Pierre Ploué to supervise the young talent at Lancia Design in Torino Centro Stile.

If you are wondering how come Stellantis chose a French to lead the renaissance of the famous Italian brand, you have to look at his illustrious CV.

Jean-Pierre Ploué’s career started in Renault (1985-1995) where he designed the Twingo (1992) and many more interesting vehicles under the direction of Patrick Le Quément. The next steps for him were Volkswagen Design Centre (1995-1998) and Ford (1998-1999) before moving to the PSA Group.

In 1999, he became the Head of Citroën Design Centre, supervising the creation of several production models and futuristic concept cars like the C-SportLounge (2005), the C-Métisse (2006), and the GT (2008). Thanks to his work in transforming the image of the French brand, a decade later he was promoted to Director of Design for the whole PSA Group, and recently he became a Stellantis Chief Design Officer.

Today, Ploué has the difficult but quite interesting challenge to bring Lancia back from the dead. The aging Ypsilon – first introduced in 2011 and still on sale in the Italian market after numerous but discreet updates – is the sole model in Lancia’s range, so the experienced designer has a lot of work to do in order to establish a new design language for the Italian brand.

“Lancia renaissance is a truly exciting challenge,”, said Ploué. “Lancia is an iconic brand, which will be restored to its central historical position in Europe, leveraging on its huge potential.”

Lancia will benefit from the parts bin of Stellantis, jointly developing new models with Alfa Romeo and DS Automobiles in order to make it a viable business in the future. Our guess is that the first new model will be an electrified premium B-SUV based on the CMP platform (Peugeot 2008, DS 3 Crossback, Opel Mokka, etc.).

We know that Lancia fans all over the world will be asking whether the brand will build modern day versions of some of its iconic models. However, we wouldn’t get our hopes up for a sportscar like the Kimera Automobili EVO037 which is a reimagined version of the mid-engined Lancia 037 Stradale, or a new Stratos or Delta Integrale. There is no doubt that those projects would look amazing, but Lancia must focus on more profitable segments – at least for now.

On June 17th at 11:00 am CET, Lancia will premiere the first chapter of a docufilm titled “Elegance in motion since 1906”, where CEO Luca Napolitano will talk about the design heritage of the brand.

Lancia To Live On In The Stellantis Era As A Premium Brand

Lancia is a mere shadow of what it used to be, with a single product, the Ypsilon supermini, which has been around since 2011, but there is still hope for the once famed Italian automaker under the Stellantis ownership.

The company will become a premium brand, as the newly formed alliance has it listed alongside Alfa Romeo and DS, and it will be led by Luca Napolitano, who is also the chief of Fiat and Abarth for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Asia) markets.

Does this mean that Lancia will be given the chance to shine again? That’s a tricky one, considering that Stellantis did not say anything about it yet. Nonetheless, they do have the right tools to reshuffle the brand and turn it into a key player with new and exciting vehicles that will hopefully bring back some of their ancestors’ DNA in the electrified and SUV-infested era – and not only an updated Ypsilon that seems to be in the making.

As for Stellantis as a whole, it would have been the sixth largest automaker in 2020, as due to the challenging year they sold a combined 3.89 million vehicles, according to a recent report. The 33 percent decrease would have put them behind Hyundai and Kia, which delivered 4.5 million cars, General Motors with 4.72 million units and Renault-Nissan with 5.54 million units. The undisputed king in terms of sales was Toyota, with 6.68 million units, followed by the Volkswagen Group with 6.18 million vehicles.
